COUNCILMAN MARK MAYOKA, THE TOWN OF HUNTINGTON AND LETTER CARRIERS CELEBRATE 21st YEAR OF STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE
Nation’s Largest Single-Day Food Drive Collected More Than 70 Million Pounds of Food Last Year

Huntington, New York, 2013 ― On Saturday, May 11, 2013, The Town of Huntington will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to help Stamp Out Hunger.   Now in its 21st year, the annual food drive has grown from a regional to a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

Councilman Mayoka has been an advocate for the food pantries and has established two places where residents can drop off non-perishable food items year round.  There is a bin in the main lobby of Town Hall located at 100 Main Street, Huntington and one at the Dix Hills Ice Rink located at 575 Vanderbilt Highway in Dix Hills.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive and is held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and Guam.  In 2012, generous Americans donated 70 million pounds of food, which marked the ninth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers.

“We’re incredibly excited for the 21st year of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive,” said Fredric V. Rolando, NALC president. “We’re asking people across the country for their support to make this year the most successful in the drive’s history. It’s so easy to make a donation: simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox to help neighbors in need. That’s all it takes.”

The need for food assistance continues to exist in every community in America, no matter how rich or poor. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 million Americans are food insecure, meaning they live at risk of hunger. Perhaps most alarming is the fact that nearly 17 million children in America are struggling with hunger.
To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in the Town of Huntington,  residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 11. Our letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to local food pantries.

Feeding America provides food assistance to 37 million Americans every year. According to Feeding America, one in eight Americans relies on the organization for food and groceries, and the organization distributes nearly 3.4 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually, including more than 800 million pounds of fresh produce.

Carriers will bring the food to local food banks, pantries or shelters, including many affiliated with Feeding America, a national partner in the drive. Assisting 1,400 local NALC branches will be rural letter carriers and other postal employees, plus members of other unions and civic volunteers. Other national partners are Campbell Soup Co., AARP, Valpak Direct Marketing Systems, Valassis/Red Plum, the U.S. Postal Service, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO, Uncle Bob's Self Storage. GLS Companies, Source Direct Plastics and the Publix grocery store chain

Town of Huntington

Councilman Mark Mayoka wants you to know the irs will be closed 5 days from may to august due to sequestration cuts

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller stated that IRS plans to issue official furlough notices as part of the agency's SEQUESTRATION CUTS. Five days from May through August were announced, with the possibility of two more days in August or September. Agency operations will be entirely shut down on these dates.

The first furlough days are scheduled to take place on May 24, June 14, July 5, July 22, and Aug. 30. The dates were staggered so that there would be a maximum of one furlough day per pay period.

The IRS considered the needs of taxpayers as well as its employees in deciding to have uniform furlough dates and entirely closing down agency operations. This also allows additional cost savings from utilities and "other services" at its locations.

On these dates, all of IRS's public-facing operations will be closed, including its toll-free operations and Taxpayer Assistance Centers.

Important Information about the MTA Tax from Councilman Mark Mayoka

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Neighbor:

The current fiscal crisis we face as a town is daunting.  Our number one priority is to recover all funds due us.  In August the New York State Supreme Court ruled that the State acted unconstitutionally in adopting the MTA payroll tax.  Currently under New York State law all claims for tax refunds are subject to a three year statute of limitations. The statute will expire on initial employer 2009 MTA payroll tax payments on November 2, 2012.

At the Huntington Town Board Meeting on October 7, I authorized the town comptroller to file a claim on behalf of the Town of Huntington to obtain a refund of the MTA payroll tax payments due to the town, and to authorize the town attorney to take all steps otherwise necessary to protect the town's claim for recovery of any and all town MTA payroll tax payments.

I urge Local Businesses, School Districts, Local Fire Departments, First Aid Squads as well as non-profit organizations to file protective claims for MTA Payroll Tax Refunds immediately.

For directions on how to file either your business or self-employed individual claim with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance you have to follow the instructions at this site:

www.tax.ny.gov/bus/mctmt/mctmt_legal_proceedings.htm

There are 3 options available that you can use to file your protective claim:

  1. If you have an Online Service account, login  and file through your services menu
  2. You can also complete an electronic form  ( In the electronic form: there is an option for both businesses and individuals)
  3. You can call an automated telephone application (518-485-2392)

I urge all Long Island employers to file a protective refund claim prior to the November 2, 2012 deadline. The deadline for self-employed individuals is April 30, 2013. In these difficult financial times we all need to protect our wallets.

Sincerely

Mark Mayoka, CPA

Councilman
