H2M architects + engineers designed a multi-story, multi-family property for The Richmond Group Development Corp. at 110 Ashburton Avenue in Yonkers, New York. The undeveloped site has now become a multi-story building with 49 residential units.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has completed its final review of the building and has confirmed the building has LEED Gold status for its design, development and construction. The building actually has two new labels – LEED Gold Certified and Energy Star.
Several small design solutions and specific material selections had come together to make this design green and sustainable. Some of those solutions include the incorporation of High-efficiency mechanical systems and the specification of finishes with high levels of recycled content, the design of a robust thermal building envelope that cuts off any potential for air or water infiltration, the combination of insulated stud wall cavities and a continuous layer of closed cell rigid insulation that wraps the exterior wall framing provides a high resistance to heat loss, windows equipped with high-efficient double pane insulated glazing to limit heat loss and solar heat gain and a building’s roofing system that includes a white membrane to keep the building cooler in summer months due to its high solar reflectance properties.
H2M provided complete architectural services along with both the mechanical-electrical-plumbing and structural engineering services for the project. H2M partnered with Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, Forum, andCapsys Corp (manufacturer of GREEN materials). Monadnock Construction was the general contractor on the project and Stephen Winter Associates was the green building consultant.
